NEW AMSTERDAM, NEW NETHERLAND
(1616-1674)
Isaac DeFOREEST, son of Jesse DeFOREST and Marie du CLOUX, was born in Leyden, Holland July 7, 1616. He immigrated to New Amsterdam March 4, 1637 on the ship Renselaerwyck. Isaac's father, Jesse was the leader of the Waloons, and is responsible for the settling of New Amsterdam in May 1624. Today, there is a Monument in Battery Park, New York City attesting to Jesse's inspiration in the settling of New Amsterdam in 1624.
But, it was Isaac DeFOREEST that founded the DeForest family in the United States. Several different spellings of the name have emerged since his immigration in 1637. DeFOREST in the Stratford, CT area, DeFOREEST in the Long Island and New York City area and DeFREEST in the Albany, NY area.
Isaac married Sara du TRIEUX, June 9, 1641. Sara was one of the first born in the New Amsterdam Colony in 1624. The young couple eventually had a total of 14 children. Of the 14, 4 sons are responsible for the 4 main branches of the DeFOREST family and the various spellings of the name found today in the United States. Isaac and Hendrick for the Long Island and New York City branches. The last born David for the Stratford, CT branch. Philip for the Albany, NY branch.
Isaac established himself as a Free Merchant. He was a tobacco planter for a number of years. He also bought and sold beaver skins, as well as land. He was also known to lend money with interest. He eventually became a brewer on a large scale.
An area in which he became very interested in was Public Affairs. He became one of the Nine Men in 1652. This board would give their opinion on matters submitted to them by the Director and Council, A few years later he became a Schepen.
In 1664 when the English took control of New Amsterdam, they took Isaac prisoner. But he was quickly released. The English were able to take control of the Colony without firing a shot.
Isaac died July 25, 1674. He was undoubtedly buried in the Old Grave Yard of the Dutch Reformed Church.
